This study revolves around the question of secularism as a discourse whose significations multiply according to the contexts in which it emerges. Understanding societies requires returning to the various constitutive elements upon which they are founded. It is historically indisputable that religion has exerted a profound influence and played a pivotal role in shaping social structures since time immemorial. There is no doubt that secularism is an ideology that separates religion from political practice as one dimension of social life. Our choice fell upon two models from contemporary Arab thought— namely, Abdelwahab Elmessiri and Mohammed Arkoun—within the framework of a comparative analytical study of secularism in contemporary Arab thought, with the aim of addressing the following problematic: If the Arkounian perspective centers on a critique of the Islamic mind—the closed and defeated mind—in the face of the challenges posed by contemporary civilization, what then are the justifications for adopting secularism as a pathway for this mind to emerge from its crisis? Conversely, if secularism, according to Elmessiri, constitutes the annihilation of human humanity and its sanctity, and the subjection of everything to the laws of nature, what then are the justifications for his critique of it? In the midst of this contradiction between Arkoun’s and Elmessiri’s visions, can we speak of a new project of secularism in the Arab-Islamic world—one that combines emancipation from dogmatism and ideological rigidity while simultaneously enabling openness to the achievements of modernity and beyond?en_US
